The Electrolyte Myth: Why Your Blood Gets Saltier When You Sweat, Not Weaker

You cannot watch a game, scroll a feed, or sit through a podcast anymore without someone selling you electrolytes. They live in oversized tubs, in single serve sticks tucked into every gym bag, sold as the one thing standing between you and feeling tired, foggy, or flat.
It has gotten strange. One popular brand runs about a dollar fifty per stick, and at the one a day they suggest, that is roughly five hundred and fifty dollars a year. Some people did the math and started buying horse electrolytes from farm supply stores instead, a trend that earned the nickname horse maxing. When your customers are raiding the livestock aisle to save money, something about the pitch has gone sideways.
If you are newer to running, hiking, or any of the long stuff, this matters, because you are exactly who the marketing is built for. So let me be the friend who says it plainly. Most people paying for a daily electrolyte habit are spending real money on a problem they do not actually have.
How a sideline drink became an everyday habit
In the 1960s, football players in Florida kept collapsing in the heat. Researchers built a simple drink to replace what the players sweated out: water, sodium, potassium, and a little sugar. The first version reportedly tasted like concentrated sweat and made players gag, so they added lemon juice. Then the team started dominating the second half of games, the drink took their nickname, and by the end of the decade it was the official drink of the NFL.
Hold onto that origin, because it is the whole point. The drink was built for athletes and the sick, the people grinding through hours of heat or losing fluids fast to illness. That is who it was ever meant for.
The trouble, for the companies, is that this is a tiny slice of humanity. So the marketing went hunting for everyone else. In the 1970s, one brand claimed its drink absorbed twelve times faster than water. By the 1990s, an ad was telling runners they needed at least forty ounces of fluid every hour, which is over a liter an hour and frankly a lot to be pouring in. The message underneath all of it stayed the same: you are secretly dehydrated and you do not even know it. Invent the problem, then sell the cure.
One major hydration brand’s own CEO later said the quiet part out loud, that they moved from selling to athletes to selling to the businessperson, the mom, and the gym-goer. They never changed the science. They just changed who they aimed it at.
What the evidence actually says
In 2012, the British Medical Journal teamed up with Oxford researchers and went through the sports drink industry’s claims. They examined more than four hundred performance claims across one hundred and four products. The number of high quality, genuinely unbiased studies backing all of that up came to three. The journal called it a triumph of marketing over science, and noted that unflattering findings had a strange way of getting rejected while flattering ones sailed through.
Newer reviews from sports dietitians land in the same spot. If you are not seriously dehydrated, extra sodium is not improving your hydration and it is not lifting your performance. The reason is almost funny once it clicks. You already eat plenty of sodium. Most people take in more salt from ordinary food than the body needs, even after you account for the bit extra that a workout costs.
The sweat myth that fooled me too
This is the one that got me for years unfortunately. The pitch sounds airtight: you sweat electrolytes out, so you have to pour them back in. Obvious, right? It is also backwards for most of what we do.
Your sweat is mostly water with a little salt in it, and it carries less salt than your blood does. So across a normal session you lose water faster than you lose sodium, which means your blood actually gets saltier, not weaker, as you go. Dumping a heavy dose of sodium into that is fixing a shortage that has not happened.
Potassium gets played the same way on labels. Brands pile it in so the electrolyte number looks impressive, but sodium is the one you mainly lose in sweat, and a single medium potato carries close to a thousand milligrams of potassium on its own. If you are eating real food, this is a non issue. The label is winning a numbers game your dinner already settled.
When electrolytes actually earn their place
Now the part that matters most here, because this site is built around endurance, and endurance is where the rules genuinely change.
Electrolytes do have a real job. It just shows up when the effort gets long, hot, and hours deep. The honest short list of who genuinely benefits looks like this:
- A summer marathon or a hot long run
- Your first ultra, or any effort running several hours
- An all day push on the trail, or a backpacking day spent sweating from breakfast until camp
- Heavy salty sweaters, plus the edge cases of real heat, illness, and fasting
Even then, the fix is humbler than the marketing wants you to think. The advice most dietitians give is to season to taste. A pinch of salt in your bottle, a salt tab when the day is genuinely brutal, and real food on long efforts will carry most runners and hikers. One dietitian put it flatly: in a blind taste test, a packet of salt from a fast food counter would likely match a premium electrolyte mix. The branded ratio on the tub is not the magic you paid for.
It is worth knowing where that line sits before you reach it. A lot of new runners learn it the hard way, mid race, which is exactly the kind of rookie lesson worth borrowing instead of repeating.
The risk of treating them like a daily vitamin
Here is what the ads leave out. More is not better, and a daily habit can quietly work against you.
Stacking packets day after day piles on sodium, and steady high sodium intake nudges blood pressure up in a fairly linear way. Blood pressure earns its nickname as the silent killer, and the daily-sachet crowd is often the last to connect it. If you already manage high blood pressure or kidney trouble, this is more reason for care, not less.
Run several servings a day and you can also overshoot on added vitamins (B6 is the common culprit), invite bloating and water retention, and in heavy overuse even disturb your heart rhythm. Then there is whatever else rides along in the tub. Some big name drinks are mostly sugar, with one popular bottle carrying well over thirty grams. Others lean hard on sweeteners, dyes, and synthetic fillers rather than anything that resembles real food. A drink can be both pointless for you and not especially good for you at the same time.
So what should a beginner actually do
Keep it simple, and keep your money.
For daily life, an office day, a walk around the block, or a short session at the gym, plain water is the entire answer. Your meals are already handling the minerals. As your efforts stretch past a couple of hours, or the heat climbs, or you already know you sweat salty, that is when you start adding a little sodium to taste and eating real food while you move. That is the whole system.
You do not need a science-backed ratio that the science does not actually back. You do not need a daily sachet. You need water, a little salt when the day runs long, and enough confidence to walk past an ad that invented your problem just to sell you the answer.
Whatever your next mile looks like, earn it, and hydrate like a human, not like a billboard.
