Who The Summer Quilt Is For

This one is for anyone sleeping outside in real heat and real humidity, the kind of nights where a standard three season bag feels like overkill before you even climb in. It’s also a smart pickup for someone building a two bag system, since it doubles as a winter liner when paired with a colder rated bag.

It is not for anyone who wants one bag to do everything. If you only own one sleeping setup and you camp across seasons, this isn’t your only answer, it’s the summer half of a bigger plan.

Summer Quilt Quick Review

Texas summer nights outside are their own kind of test. It’s not cold that gets you, it’s the humidity sitting on your skin at 2am with the air barely moving. Most bags I’ve owned turn into a sauna in that kind of heat, even the ones rated for warm weather. This quilt is the first one that actually let me vent without feeling like I was sleeping under a plastic sheet.

The center and neck snaps do the real work here. On the muggiest nights I leave both open and just let the quilt drape, and it still holds enough loft to take the edge off once the temperature drops toward morning. On cooler nights I cinch the neck cord and it seals up fast without fuss. If you are a ground sleeper make sure you go wide enough to allow some shift, I think most would be happy choosing the broad width at 60″ as this basically removes all drafts for anyone but the largest in shoulders.

At 9.9 ounces, it simply disappears in a pack. That matters more than people expect once you’re a few miles in on a hot trail day and every ounce on your back is working against you. I’ve packed it as an “in case the weather turns” backup on trips where I wasn’t sure I’d even need it, and never regretted the weight.

I have not yet used it as a true winter liner, so I can’t speak to that half of its job yet. Everything here is based on standalone summer use in my area conditions.

Cons to the Summer Quilt

• No hood, so cold ears are on you to solve with a hat or hood layer
• $399 is a real number for what is essentially a warm weather quilt
• Sizing chart language on the product page is a little confusing to parse before you order

I’m using the Standard-Medium, which Zpacks lists as fitting up to 6’0″. The product page also lists a 55 inch figure alongside that height, and it isn’t clear from the listing whether that’s a girth, torso, or shoulder measurement. If you’re near that upper height limit or have a broader build, it’s worth reaching out to Zpacks directly before ordering rather than guessing from the chart.
